Temporary winter shelter at səmiq̓ʷəʔelə closing soon.
The temporary winter shelter that has been in operation at səmiq̓ʷəʔelə will close as of April 30, 2026. All shelter services will wind down at this time. We appreciate your support during the shelter’s operation.
The temporary winter shelter was operated by Progressive Housing Society while local partners work on more permanent housing solutions to address homelessness in the Tri-Cities. This winter, the shelter served between 15 – 20 people each night, with many guests returning regularly.
The addition of these shelter spaces during the winter was made possible through a partnership between the kʷikʷəƛ̓əm First Nation, the City of Coquitlam and the province, through BC Housing and local MLAs Jennifer Blatherwick, Jodie Wickens and Rick Glumac.
The Province, through BC Housing, funded a record of nearly 6,500 shelter spaces in almost 60 communities throughout B.C. this winter season. We look forward to working with the City of Coquitlam, Port Moody and Port Coquitlam on a long-term sustainable shelter and housing strategy.
